PN's Scrap up North

Following discussion on Ausrollingstock (Yahoogroup), I thought I would post some photos taken in March 2008, prior to PN owned wagons being scrapped.


Paddock near Gap. A lot of wagons were NGDX, NGUX, NHAF, NOBX.


Also in the paddock was an NGSA with AFL logo.


Another photo of the line up. I recall over 100 wagons were in this field. These wagons are all now gone.

An NQVF (former flexivan flat) at Narrabri. These wagons are now gone.

Just west of Tamworth, a long string of mainly NGOF and NGNF grain hoppers were stored. A few NGDX hoppers were also stored. I'm not sure if these are currently going to scrap.

At the time, NGUX aluminium grain hoppers wewre being chopped at Werris Creek.

At Westdale, one string of NGMAs, NGUXs, and NGOF/NGNFs are stored. To the left of the photo (over the road) was at least tweo more strings of NGMA hoppers. All these are being transferred for scrapping.

Morandoo Steel Wagons

Photoed some not some common wagons at Morandoo, plus some upgraded RKHFs.


RKHF 20396 (with 20393 and 20346) have been upgraded and repainted. These wagons, and the upgraded RKEX (No RKEF) are very similar in purpose. These wagons have removable stancions, a cut out section in one end for dunnage, and at the other end, a moveable divider is stored to enable the loading of short products. I beleive the upgrades are being done at EDI Port Augusta.


Gold old RCPF 31857 was in the yard, along ith a few others - 31842, 31823 and 31820. Of interest, this wagon is fitted with an RGXD (50t ride control straight frame - like XLA) and a XGB (50t former top hung) bogie.


I haven't seen one of these in years, and can only assume they see limited use, or are resticted on a particular corridor. RCIX 22161 is seen with a repainted side sill. Also in the consist was RCIX 22134 and 14526. These are former NQIX40ft container flats.

Road Trip

Drove from Brisbane to Singleton, via Moree, and sighted a few interesting wagons which are shown below:


LSR Shunter truck at Warwick QLD


VAOG 34211 and about 20 more are stored at Inglewood, out near Goondiwindi. This is a former coal hopper fitted with a grain lid.


The only thing in Moree was XGAY 0006. Most of the XGAYs were parked at Werris Creek, with another at Carrington.

Along woith a rake of NGVF grain hoppers, about 5 NTOF oil tankers are stored at Narrabri. Here NTOF 1294 still has Cargill logos, but the Freightcorp has been painted out.

Gunnedah is a large depot for Manildra Group. Here MHGX 41 is seen in flour duties, and still carried the original Manildra Harwood Sugars lettering, which was placed on the wagons in preparation for a sugar contract that didn't eventuate. Note the weathered colour of this hopper from carrying flour. Also note the vibrator marks on the side of the hopper, where it is placed assist in the unloading of the flour.

Much cleaner MHGX 116, parked with a few others. Due to the different door configuration on the high numbered wagons, this particular wagon is used in grain traffic.

Where is PNQ

Well, another day wasted trackside waiting for a PNQ train.

I sat out near Carseldine (Lacey Rd and Telegraph Rd) in beautiful light from around 3pm to 4.45pm and only managed to see 6 electric trains (Big sarcastic WOW).

PNQ was due through about 4pm I believe. Tomorrow morning is my last chance to see another PNQ train. Here goes nothing!

The Westlander

Everytime I am in Brisbane, I simply can't help myself and go for a shot of the Westlander, normally somewhere between Toowoomba and Rosewood - often chasing it for as long as possible if the weather is good. I am surprised the Westlander still runs as it always seems to be quite empty.

I got to Laidley around 9.03am, and to my surprise, I could see the train coming into Laidley on my right. A mad dash to the road bridge a bit to the east of town, allowed me the first shot (with about 20 seconds to spare). After that, another mad dash down the road, allowed me to jump out of the car andget a second shot just out of town. I then back tracked a bit and headed for Grandchester. I beat him back by a few minutes and was keen for a shot coming through the lovely station, but a loaded train was in the loop (and being passed) so that was not viable. I headed towards Rosewood and got a few sde on shots.

Below are some other shots I got during the day.

1751 was on a light engine transfr to Redbank Workshops. The consist was 1762/1751/2331/2366/2346/1723.

Western Coal Trains

Headed West on Thursday to get the Westlander and a few coal trains, and I was pretty sure some repainted 2300s wee now working on the coal.

In about 3 hours of running around, I managed to get 2 coal trains. The photos are below.


2347/2310 lead and empty through Helidon


2361/2359 lead a loaded away from Granchester, heading towards Rosewood.


I have always noticed the hoppers carry subtle code variations. Below are three examples. If anyone knows why they are different, I would love to know.

My First PNQ

With a little bit of good advice from a few mates, I headed out o Strathpine an hour earlier, and surprise, surprise, PNQ was right on time. PN004 led a string of loaded 3-packs.

There are three different types of 3-packs. RNAY, RNBY and RNCY. The variation is with the platform lengths. The type are:

1. All 48ft platforms
2. End 48ft platforms and middle 40ft platform
3. All 40ft platforms

Below are some photos of the train.

An unusual reefer container. It was about 24-28ft long.

A Toll QRX Seacell container. These QRXB containers have three loading hatches in the roof and a bulk door across the end of the container. Probably carries a food product such as sugar.

An Omega Chemicals container loaded with Sulphuric Acid. Next to it are two QRX side door container, commonly used in fruit and veg transportation.

The Electric Tilt train made an appearance also.

Set 87 might hav e been ex Overhaul, as it was running back and forth and looked quite clean.

Taken a day later at the PNQ terminal, the photo shows the end bogie on a 3-pack wagon.

Electric Train Desparation

Headed to Strathpine footbridge this afternoon to try and get a freight or two. With only half an hour to spend, I made the most of it, and in shear desparation, took photos of electric trains. Below are what I managed to get. Some are going away shots.

Workshop Museum Visit

Went for a visit to the Workshops Museum at Ipswich QLD. I have been a few times before, and recommend it highly to anyone interested in railways. There is also plenty for the kids to do. Below are a few photos from the day.

Special car 445, built at Ipswich in 1903. I found the number on the side of the carriage quite unique with a mixed font.
