WA Standard Gauge Wagons

Finally, here is part 2 of my WA trip, with some standard gauge wagons.

WA Container Wagons

Thanks to those who have commented on this Blog.  I have added some more wagon details in the blog in RED.

 

11 days since my last Blog - talk about slack!  Anyway, I have just been over to Western Australia for 24 hours, and managed to get about 1100 photos.

 

I've processed them all through Photoshop and will try and post them in some sort of order.  This batch is all about ARG/QRN container wagons.

 

The weather was pretty nice, but I had to take what I could get on Friday morning (at 0530), especially with the incredible consist on 5426 from Kalgoorlie. 

 

 

AQAY 2273 was converted to this current format when ASR/AWR existed.  The chassis is an AOOX, cut down and skeletalised.  I am pretty sure it is a one off and was probably not financially viable (although it is a good concept).  These shots were around the Northam/Toodyay area.

 

Definately a former Commonwealth Railways RO, this wagon is now AQBY 30121.  I imagine when AWR was purchased by QRN, this wagon, and some other AQBYs came along for the sale.  The wagon probably wore the code AQOY/RQOY previously.

 

This wagon (and 6 others) were built new for WAGR back in the 1970s, with a code of WFCX.  30121 is the class leader, and they are very similar to the ROX wagons operated by CR.

 

AQCY 31033.  This is a pretty stock standard WAGR 63ft container wagon.  Previously coded WQCY, many were coded WQTY when Toll ran a train service around 2000-2001.  Quite a few are in NSW also running as AQCY wagons leased from GWA. 

 

AQGY 30048.  While this is a WAGR wagon, I don't have any details on it.  Certainly a beefy little sucker.  The above three shots were at Kwinana.

This wagon is a former WFDY type wagon.

 

AQHY 30058 with sulphuric acid tank CSA 0073.  Seems the AQHY fleet are all fitted with CSA tanks.  This shot was at Forrestfield.

Still wearing the orange from Alice to Darwin line construction trains, AQRY 1003 is a bar coupled two-pack.  This wagon was a former AFRF railset and has a long history with the Commonwealth Railways.  Interestingly, the wagons retain a non-WA number.  This shot is near Toodyay.

 

AQWY 30231.  This seems to be a standard WQCY/AQCY with a weight reduction deck modification.  This wagon is carrying containerised Ammonium Nitrate.

 

AQWY 30412. This seems to be a standard WQCY/AQCY with a weight reduction deck modification. This wagon is carrying liquid Ammonium Nitrate.

 

Carrying a special wagon code of AZDY, this wagon numbered 30726 is loaded with Sodium Cyanide containers.  Again, it is a WAGR wagon but I am unsure of the history behind it.  The above three photos were taken at Kwinana.

 

This wagon is a former WBAX boxcar.

Western QLD lines - 25 August 2007

After seeing the Wuiske model release of the QLX and QSC, I thought I'd have a look for what memories and photos I have of these 'boxcars' - hoping to maybe buy a few on the 'broad gauge' to go with some 2300s.  I have too much Aussie and US stuff to convert my 1435mm empire!  

 

Usually heading 'west' towards Laidley and the Toowoomba range about once a year, the normal delights are coal train after coal train, with a glimpse of the Westlander and maybe a container service.  A stock train, mollasses train and the occasional wheat train also made things interesting.

 

Knowing that the Charleville (Cunnamulla/Quilpie) freight was running, Graham and I based ourselves at Miles, about 200km west of Toowoomba.  We would meet the train heading east and follow it back.  On 25/08/2007, we got up early and headed west, getting towards Jackson (Between Miles and Roma) before spotting the train coming towards us.  The chase was on - easy to catch, but getting it in sunny conditions was the challenge. 

 

Below are some photos from the day, including plenty of wagon shots.  This might be one of my biggest Blogs yet!

 

For the record, the train into Miles consisted of 2315/2481 and:

13 QSC type curtain siders, 12 QLX type vans, 1 HWO, and 4 RCF reefers on the rear.  At Miles, 10 Sheel diesel tankers were attached to the front of the train.

SCT PBHY - Greater Freighter

Time for a blast from the past.  With a new HO model due soon, I thought I might share some SCT PBHY Greater Freighter photos with you, as well as some livery details.  

 

Class leader PBHY 0001 at Islington on 29/07/2006.  At this stage, these wagons were pretty new. , having only entered service in late 2005 or early 2006.  0001 is the only wagon to have the Greater Freighter lettering and the BIG W logo.

 

PBHY 0002 at Islington on 04/02/2009, shows the Greater Freight lettering only.  0003 and 0004 also carried this lettering.  There are a few PBHYs getting around with scuffs on the 'T' letter - probably due to the door latch scraping. 

 

PBHY 0024 was very fresh on 29/07/2006 departing Islington.  From what I have photoed, it seems that wagons 0018 to 0027 inclusive were fitted with the BIG W decals. 

 

PBHY 0062, was part of the second order of these wagons (two batches of 32).  I'm pretty sure there are 64 vans (0001-0064), with the vast majority looking the same as 0062.  There are a few minor variations in the later build.  The main items being the slightly different number board and the reflectors.  Certainly nothing major.  Here is 0062 at Forrestfield on 20/11/2007.

Hunter Loco Portraits

 

A few loco portraits of locos around the Hunter.  Not a huge selection, but pretty good for an hour at Tarro.

Newcastle Bits

Some bits and pieces from Newcastle a few weeks back.  The sun wasn't always out, but the interest factor was high. 

 

A good modelling project - a repaired CAI container with a grey panel.

 

The old and the not so old CSA containers heading for Cobar on a CQSY wagon.

Now this is an odd one - a single NHRH!  NHRH 50171.

 

Quite a few of the PHCH wagons have very clean bogies, showing the original green colour scheme on the CRA coded bogies.  These have possibly been cleaned to allow for axle inspection following a series of broken axles over the last 12 months.
